In theory, this could describe every magic user in fiction more or less! However, some magic users channel the magic of higher beings through spells more than they used their own energy. Doctor Fate (DC) has tremendous amounts of energy stored in the helm of Nabu (DC Who’s Who V1 #6).
Doctor Strange (Marvel) on the other hand uses spells that harness the energy of other beings more (Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe V1 #3).
Magic rather than science is the source of most superpowers in the sword and sorcery genre. The Spell Weaver generates its own magic energy in TSR 2145 Monstrous Compendium Annual Volume 1.
